Our Track

Our Track

Our dual-gauge 1.2 km mainline track, as well as the extensive sidings, have been constructed and maintained by our members over many years.  This includes the design and construction of numerous sets of points to allow our trains to switch tracks and be directed on their journey.  We currently use prototypically profiled rail and recycled plastic sleepers throughout our mainline.

The track meanders through the wonderful surrounds of Elgar Park, passing well established trees which were mere saplings when the society was originally formed, past lush garden beds lovingly tended by society members and over bridges next to our swamp, home to a population of frogs.

During your journey around our railway you will travel over and under bridges, through cuttings, along high embankments, over level crossings and past working signals which help make sure our trains remain a safe distance apart.  The track layout is a folded double figure of eight, which means you’ll pass others trains on your trip, with plenty of opportunities to see the trains in action and wave to other passengers.  Keep an eye out during your journey; we regularly see tawny frog-mouths, rainbow lorikeets, possums and other resident wildlife around our railway.
